KPU Optimistic Participation Of The 2024 Election Increases Compared To 2019

JAKARTA - Member of the Indonesian General Elections Commission (KPU) Idham Holik is optimistic that participation in the 2024 General Election will increase compared to the previous five years or 2019.

"We can see how potential participation is, I believe participation will be better, both in terms of quantity and in terms of quality," said Idham as quoted by ANTARA, Wednesday, January 31.

According to him, the description of the enthusiasm of the community, especially young voters, is reflected in the content on social media. The Ministry of Communication and Information noted that there was a decline in hoax content circulating during the 2024 election campaign period compared to the 2019 election campaign period.

This can be seen from the amount of content related to elections carried out by blocking or taking down from November 28, 2023 to January 11, 2024, as much as 51 content and the issuance of around 175 clarifications on hoaxes regarding elections.

"There, it has shown that there is a good understanding of how to communicate on social media. This is very different from 2019," he said.

Idham said in the 2019 election there were many studies that said voters were sharply polarized. This condition is inversely proportional to now, which means the maturity of voters is getting more mature.

"Usually people get older have higher enthusiasm. Why? Because he has the awareness that this election is important," explained Idham.

He revealed that voter participation in the 2019 Election reached 82 percent. Therefore, the KPU seeks to increase the voter participation rate in the 2024 General Election.

"In principle, the election should be better today. We are aware that it requires collaboration and mutual cooperation of all the nation's children," he concluded.

The 2024 election was attended by 18 national political parties, namely the National Awakening Party (PKB), Gerindra Party, PDI-P, Golkar Party, NasDem Party, Labor Party, and the Indonesian Gelora Party.

Then, there are the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), the Nusantara Awakening Party (PKN), the Hanura Party, the Garuda Party, the National Mandate Party (PAN), the Crescent Star Party (PBB), the Democratic Party, the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI), the Perindo Party, the United Development Party (PPP), and the Ummat Party.

The 2024 election was also attended by six local political parties, namely the Aceh Nanggroe Party, the Atjeh Beusaboh Tha'at and Taqwa Generation Party, the Aceh Darul Party, the Aceh Aceh Party, the Aceh Prosperous Justice Party, and the Acehnese People's Independent Solidity Party.

The 2024 General Election is held simultaneously to elect candidates for legislative members as well as the president and vice president on February 14, 2024.

The KPU has also received registrations for three presidential-cawapres candidates, namely Anies Baswedan-Muhaimin Iskandar, Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud MD, and Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka. The election campaign period is set from November 28, 2023 to February 10, 2024.
