PAMEKASAN - The Department of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) of East Java Province completed research conducted on drilling wells belonging to residents in Kadur Village which had emitted gas and caught fire some time ago.

"Based on the notification we received, the water from the drill well belonging to residents in Kadur Village, Kadur District, Pamekasan is not toxic. It's just that it contains gas," said Acting (Pj) Regent of Pamekasan Masrukin as reported by ANTARA, Tuesday, January 30.

He said that based on the notification, the gas content of the residents' drill wells that had emitted water with a height of 14 meters and caught fire after being ignited with the lighter reached 7 percent.

Previously, the Head of Geology and Groundwater, at the East Java ESDM Service, Ariful Bhuana, explained that the gas burst occurred because the drill well at a depth of 141 meters penetrated the quartz sandstone acquifer as a reservoir for groundwater and clay as an impermeable layer at the top.

"The gas is actually very small in size and will run out on its own, but how long will it last, we still don't know because there must be further studies," he said.

Ariful said the water could not be used by local residents as drinking water and/or clean water, because it contained chloride and it tasted salty.

"It is estimated that the water came from contact between the akuifer and groundwater so that the water tasted salty, and we have taken samples 3 times but the chloride content remains high," he added.

Meanwhile, until now, officers have not removed the police line around the drill well, in order to prevent unwanted things.*
