RIAU - Dumai Navy Base (Lanal), Riau Province thwarted the departure of 16 illegal Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI) who wanted to be smuggled into Malaysia in Sepahat Village, Bandar Laksamana District, Bengkalis Regency. "These 16 PMIs were secured by Lanal Dumai's F1QR Team starting with information regarding the existence of a non-procedural PMI candidate who will go to Malaysia on the coast of Sepahat Village, Bandar Laksamar District," said Commander Lanal Dumai Marine Colonel (P) Kariady Bangun, Antara, Wednesday, January 17. It is said that Bangun, the 16 PMIs are 11 men and 5 women and are planned to be dispatched by speed boat to Malaysia. Before leaving, they hid in community-owned oil palm plantations first. "Currently, 16 PMIs are being collected data and also checking health before being submitted to the relevant agencies," he said. From this provisional statement from PMI, each candidate is charged a fee by their departure agent of Rp5-18.5 million. "So before they departed from their hometown, they had communicated with agents via cellphones and the fees set varied for each PMI," said Danlanal. This success, said Bangun, is a form of readiness and preparedness of the Indonesian Navy in dealing with various threats of Trafficking in Persons (TPPO) in its working area. This is in accordance with instructions from the Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Muhammad Ali.

"This PMI violates Law 18 of 2017 concerning the protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers, then submitted to the Dumai City Indonesian Migrant Workers Protection Service Post (P4MI) for further processing," he said.
