SAMARINDA - Samarinda City Police, East Kalimantan, arrested the perpetrator of theft, a specialist in breaking car windows with the initials NR alias SM alias AJ (54) who committed his crime in the parking lot of the Great Mosque, Pelita Street, Samarinda, last Sunday, January 7.
Samarinda Police Chief Kombes Ary Fadli said the perpetrator had been jailed four times because of the same case and was last released in May 2023.
"He has acted similarly in Samarinda three times, including at the Great Mosque yesterday. He also tried to break into a car in a shop, but failed because someone was inside," he said in Samarinda, Antara, Friday, January 12.
Ary conveyed that the perpetrator took advantage of the deserted situation when the victim left his car to worship at the mosque. Using a screwdriver, the perpetrator broke the car window and took Rp1 million in cash and a cell phone belonging to the victim.
"The victim immediately reported to the Sungai Pinang Police after finding out that his car was damaged and his belongings were missing," he said.
The police immediately conducted an investigation and arrested the perpetrator at his boarding house on Jalan Otto Iskandardinata, Sungai Dama Village, Samarinda, Thursday (11/1) in the morning.
From the hands of the perpetrators, the police confiscated evidence in the form of a screwdriver, CCTV footage, clothes worn during the action, the victim's bag, and the perpetrator's motorbike.
Ary Fadli continued that the perpetrator admitted to using stolen goods to meet daily needs such as eating and cigarettes.
"To account for his actions, the perpetrator was charged with Article 363 of the Criminal Code concerning theft with a weighted threat of a maximum sentence of seven years in prison," he said.
The police chief appealed to the public to immediately report to the nearest police station if things interfere with security.
"We continue to strive to provide a sense of security to the community. We also appreciate the community's participation in maintaining mutual security," he said.
He added that his party would take firm action against perpetrators who were troubling the public, such as theft, robbery, fraud, and drugs.
He also reminded the public to remain vigilant and always carry valuables if they leave the vehicle.
"If anyone sees a crime, immediately report it to the nearest police station. We are ready to serve and protect the public," said Ary Fadli.
