WASHINGTON - United States (US) on Saturday (6/1) said it had shot down a drone launched from Yemen in the Red Sea, amid rising tensions with Yemen's Houthis rebel group.

"On January 6, at around 9.30 p.m. (the time of Sanaa; or 13.30 p.m. local time), unmanned aerial vehicles from the Iran-backed Yemenian area were shot down as self-defense USS LABOON (DDG 59) in international waters of the South Red Sea around commercial ships," wrote the US Central Command (CENTCOM) on X.

"No casualties or damage were reported," they continued.

The Houthis have targeted ships in the South Red Sea, warning that they will attack all ships bound for Israel. They said the attack was to support Palestinians amid the "aggression and siege" carried out by Israel in Gaza.

The Red Sea is one of the most frequently used sea routes in the world for oil and fuel shipments.

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin recently announced the establishment of a multinational mission - Operation Prosperity Guardian (Operation Guard Prosperity) - to counter the Houthis attack.
