The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Cianjur Regency, West Java recorded heavy rain for more than two hours causing hundreds of houses in three sub-districts to be flooded about one meter high and dozens of families displaced.

Head of BPBD Cianjur Asep Sukma Wijaya said the floods hit Ciranjang, Bojongpicung, and Haurwangi sub-districts, due to the overflowing of the Cibodas River that was passing through the area.

"We are still collecting data because the flood continues to spread to three sub-districts, it is recorded that joint officers are still trying to evacuate residents trapped in houses that were flooded by more than one meter," he said as quoted by ANTARA, Thursday, January 4.

He explained that heavy rains that fell from Thursday afternoon and night caused the Cibodas River's water discharge to continue to increase, so that it overflowed and recalled the residents' villages in the three sub-districts.

Joint officers were sent to the location to provide assistance to residents as well as collect data because from evening until night the flood continued to spread, while village and sub-district officials were asked to prepare evacuation locations for residents whose houses were flooded.

"Residents who are displaced are still collecting data, but for the initial report, eight families consist of 14 people trapped in a house in Pasirgadung Village, Sukawangi Village will be evacuated to a location that is considered safe from flooding," he said.

According to information from residents of Pasirgadung Village, initially they chose to stay indoors because so far, the village has never been flooded with water levels more than an adult calf.

However, the flood water level this time reached about one meter.

"We have lived in this village for decades, we have never flooded more than adult calf, this is the first time it has been flooded as high as one meter so we asked for help from BPBD Cianjur to be evacuated for fear of higher water," said a local resident, Dadan Setiawan.

He called the flood this time the worst hit the local village which is currently around 650 families.

A small number of residents whose houses were submerged in water chose to flee to the local village hall.
