ECPAT: Children's Sexual Exploitation Trigger Technology Moves To Virtual Space

JAKARTA - Indonesia's ECPAT mentions the rapid development of technology making child sexual exploitation currently shift to virtual spaces. ECPAT is known to be a network of civil society organizations working to end sexual exploitation of children.

"There has been a shift in child sexual exploitation that has been happening in real space. The development of technology, so sexual exploitation has moved to a virtual space," said Indonesia's ECPAT National Coordinator Ahmad Sofian in an online discussion in Jakarta, Friday, December 29, which was confiscated by Antara.

According to him, technology is developing rapidly to create changes in the form of child sexual exploitation via online.

Ahmad Sofian said that around the world, the rapidly growing internet space has made more children vulnerable to sexual exploitation and harassment.

"Technology is used to share various sexual activities that are actually very confident, but are displayed in public," he said.

In addition, criminals use technology to space children.

Ahmad Sofian said that according to Internet Watch Foundation data in 2022, there will be 255,571 content of child violence and sexual harassment in the online realm throughout the world.

This figure will increase by 20 percent in 2023.

"The content reported came from sites featuring pictures and videos of child sexual abuse," said Ahmad Sofian.

He added that the Netherlands became the country with the highest number of reporting of child violence and sexual harassment content in the world, with a total equivalent to 32 percent of all related content spread globally.
