KPU Will Set A Voting Method Abroad Next Week

JAKARTA - The General Elections Commission will determine the voting method abroad on Tuesday (26/12).

"On December 26," said KPU chairman Hasyim Asy'ari as quoted by ANTARA, Thursday, December 21.

This method must be determined immediately considering that the voting process abroad has more than one option.

First, the voting method at polling stations (TPS), postal methods, and mobile ballot boxes (KSK) methods. Second, postal methods, for example, the KPU must send ballots through the post no later than one month before voting.

"If later there is a vote at the polling station on February 14, 2024, one month is January," he explained.

However, until now the KPU is still experiencing problems related to the voting process in Hong Kong and Macau. The reason is, the local government does not allow the KPU to establish TPS.

The KPU is only welcome to establish a TPS at the Indonesian Consulate General (KJRI) building located in Causeway Bay, Hong Kong.

According to Hasyim, the Indonesian Consulate General's Building is considered not possible to establish TPS when viewed from safety and security factors. The total number of DPT for the 2024 General Election in Hong Kong and Macau is 164,691 people.

The KPU explained that the reason for the prohibition of the establishment of TPS outside the Indonesian Consulate General's Office was because during the voting day, February 13, 2024, it was still in the atmosphere of the Chinese New Year holiday which falls on February 10, 2024.

"It's not enough, we have a lot of voters. Later, if the long queue gets a warning too. So, we are looking for a strategic one that the KPU can still serve voters without causing further problems," said Hasyim.

He estimates that the most likely thing that will be used by the KPU for voting is by postal method. For that. The KPU will discuss further in the future considering that there will be details of the changing voter data.

"It means that some voters initially used polling stations, some voters used posts. It was decided in the KPU's decision to recap the 2023 voter national data which was attended by representatives of political parties and also Bawaslu," he concluded.
