Erdogan Calls For UN Reform After US Veto Ceasefire In Gaza

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan repeated his call to reform the UN Security Council following a veto by the United States expected resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire.

"As a result of the US veto, no agreement has been reached. It is very important for the UN Security Council to be reformed," Erdogan said in a speech at the World Human Rights Day event in Istanbul.

Erdogan pun mengatakan bahwa tak ada lagi yang bisa diharapkan dari Dewan Keamanan PBB untuk mengakhiri perang di Gaza,

"We no longer have hope or belief in the UN Security Council. Since October 7, the UN Security Council, whose mission is to create global peace, has turned into Israel's protector," he added, as quoted by Anadolu.

Israel continued its military offensive in the Gaza Strip on December 1 after a week's humanitarian break with the Palestinian Hamas group ended.

About 17,700 Palestinians in Gaza have died in Israeli air and ground attacks since October 7, 2023.

Erdogan stressed that the Israeli government, which is fully supported by Western countries, has committed atrocities and massacres in Gaza that have humiliated mankind as a whole.

"The Gaza Workers must be responsible for crimes against humanity," Erdogan said.

"The persecution, brutality, and barbarism experienced in the Palestinian occupied territories must be questioned, both in terms of human conscience and before the law," Erdogan added.

He said a fair world might be created, but not with the US because they sided with Israel.

Erdogan further said that the Universal Declaration of UN Human Rights had been openly violated in Gaza and the occupied territories of Palestine.

We view this declaration as the foundation of a dignified human struggle, although it has not been able to end human rights abuses. We believe that this declaration has contributed significantly to the creation of global awareness regarding the protection and improvement of human rights," Erdogan continued.
