SURABAYA - The Surabaya City Government (Pemkot) carries out various strategies in an effort to prevent flooding when it rains. One of them is by optimizing 75 pump houses spread across the City of Heroes.

"In our calculations, with the condition of the waterway, there is no pump house, the water discharge with the speed flowing into the river or the sea is smaller than the one with the pump house," said Head of the Drainage Division of the Surabaya City Water Resources and Highways (DSDABM), Windo Gusman Prasetyo, Tuesday, December 5.

Windo said the pump house was effective in preventing inundation when it rained. This is because the existence of this pump house will accelerate the flow of water to the river or sea.

Even so, said Windo, the construction of pump houses was not necessarily carried out by the city government at certain points. Because the construction of pump houses must go through studies and calculations in the field. "So for the construction of pump houses, we don't necessarily build them at certain points, we have calculations," he said.

For example, the construction of the Undaan Pump House. The pump house, which was built in 2023, aims to divide the flow of water during heavy rains in the central city area.

"With this pump house, if in previous years the flow of water ran north towards Tambak Wedi, then we hope that we can divide the south towards Kalimas," he said.

In addition, his party in 2023 also built a pump house in the Bulak area. The existence of this pump house aims to overcome the inundation that has been happening in the local area. Because when it rains heavily, the water flow in the area only flows to the Kenjeran I Pump House.

"So we divided the Kenjeran I Pump House so that there was not too much burden to receive, which eventually hampered the rate of water. So we hope that the Bulak Pump House can resolve inundation in the Tambak Deres area and its surroundings," he said.

In addition to Bulak and Undaan, Windo said that in 2023 the Surabaya City DSDBM will also build a MERR Pump House. The existence of this pump house will also help reduce the flow of water to the Kebon Agung Pump House.

"There is also a Bozem Aquatic Pump House in the Ketintang area and the Kebraon Pump House. On Kebraon II and around Jalan Durian, puddles often occur during the rainy season, so we wake up the pump house," he said.

In addition, in 2023, his party will also build Gresikan Pump House, in the Tambaksari District, Surabaya. The construction of this pump house also aims to overcome inundation during the rainy season in the Jalan Jagiran, Ploso Bogen, and Gresikan areas.

"We are also making improvements and maintenance of flood pumps in the Surabaya area, so that when it rains it can operate optimally," he concluded.
