KPU: Presidential And Vice Presidential Candidates With Ministerial Status No Need To Resign From Their Positions

JAKARTA - Member of the General Elections Commission (KPU) Idham Holik said that presidential and vice presidential candidates who are still ministers do not need to resign from their positions while obtaining permission from the president for leave.

"Cuti can be done by a presidential or vice presidential candidate who has the status of a minister during activities related to elections," said Idhamdi as quoted by ANTARA, Wednesday, October 18.

Idham explained that the activities related to the election include the registration stage, health checks, the determination of pairs of candidates for the 2024 presidential election, drawing and determining the serial numbers of candidate pairs, and campaigning.

This provision is based on Article 16 of KPU Regulation (PKPU) Number 19 of 2023 concerning the Nomination of Participants in the General Election of the President and Vice President.

In addition to ministers and ministerial-level officials, continued Idham, Article 15 of PKPU Number 19 of 2023 also regulates several other state officials who do not need to resign if they nominate as president or vice president.

The officials are the president, vice president, leadership and members of the MPR, leaders and members of the DPR, leaders and members of the DPD, governors, deputy governors, regents, deputy regents, mayors, and deputy mayors.

Idham also stated that the provisions regarding the leave period given were contained in Article 36 paragraph 1 of Government Regulation (PP) Number 32 of 2018, which stipulates that ministers and officials at the ministerial level, governors, deputy governors, regents, deputy regents, mayors, and deputy mayors carry out one week of leave during the election campaign.
