KLHK Immediately Rehabilitates Damaged Ecosystems On Mount Bromo

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) stated that it would immediately carry out rehabilitation to restore ecosystems damaged by fires in the Mount Bromo area, East Java.

"What is important now in my opinion is rehabilitation or recovery, from all aspects, namely physical, economic, social, and management, then how is public education," said Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbayabakar in a statement quoted by ANTARA, Saturday, September 23.

Siti visited the Mount Bromo area to see the impact of fires that have damaged biodiversity in the area.

He said the rehabilitation activity was carried out after the Mount Bromo area experienced a fire caused by a flare used in a suspected photo session.

"The incident resulted in the burned land area reaching 989 hectares," he said.

The area of the burning Mount Bromo area is in a diverse field. Therefore, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry is studying how effective recovery efforts are to restore the affected ecosystem.

"We also see how the recovery is carried out with intervention and natural succession is still being studied, because the terrain varies, especially since there is a sand abundance of around 6 thousand hectares from 50 thousand hectares," said Siti.

The Ministry of Environment and Forestry involved a team of experts from the Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB), Gadjah Mada University (UGM), and Universitas Brawijaya in restoring the ecosystem in the burned area.

Siti revealed that there are many aspects that must be rebuilt for the area managed by the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Center (TNBTS).

He also invited other parties to work together, such asUSAID. This is because of the existence of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park which is very strategic and known nationally and internationally.
