British Foreign Minister begins Visit to Israel and Palestine Today: Highlights Two-State Solution and Iran

JAKARTA - British Foreign Minister James Cleverly visits Israel and Palestine this week, where he will urge new dialogue on a two-state solution and commit to addressing threats to regional security, including from Iran.

During the visit starting Monday, Foreign Minister Cleverly will hold talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh.

Meanwhile, in his speech at an international security conference on Tuesday, Cleverly will discuss the security challenges facing Israel and the Palestinian territories, as well as the importance of a two-state solution.

He will highlight Iran's "enabling terrorism" through its support for the militant groups Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, according to a statement.

"Britain and Israel are working closely together to keep our people safe," Cleverly said ahead of his trip, reported by Reuters, September 11.

He pledged "to renew our close security partnership, in the face of unacceptable threats from the Iranian regime".

In addition, he will hold talks with Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen and attend a demonstration of Israel's "Iron Dome" missile defense system.

During his visit to the Palestinian territories, Minister of Foreign Affairs Cleverly will visit the Jalazone refugee camp in the West Bank to see Palestinian refugees.

It is known that violence in the West Bank has worsened over the past year with increasing Israeli attacks and street attacks by Palestinians.

Prospects for reviving US-brokered peace talks aimed at establishing a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem remain low, nearly a decade after they deadlocked.
