JAKARTA - The Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) asked the public not to start fires in the open because they are prone to triggering forest and land fires.
The statement was made by the Director General of Environmental and Forestry Law Enforcement of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Rasio Ridho Sani, in response to the case of the savana desert fire due to the use of flares forulant photo sessions at Teletubbies Hill, Mount Bromo, East Java.
"With El Nino's situation, we hope that people will not set fire in the open because it has the potential to cause cases of forest and land fires," he said, quoted by ANTARA, Friday, September 8.
Rasio said there are three factors that cause forest and land fires, namely bad environmental conditions, extreme weather, and humans.
According to him, as many as 99 percent of cases of forest and land fires in Indonesia occur due to human factors.
The threat of punishment for perpetrators who burn forests and land is a maximum of 10 years in prison and a fine of Rp. 10 billion. In fact, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry can also file a civil lawsuit of absolute responsibility related to forest and land fires in concession locations and other locations.
"We have enforced the law on the case of using fireworks in Komodo National Park. The perpetrators have been punished," said Rasio.
