JAKARTA - PT Pertamina (Persero) targets to become a global supplier of batteries for electric vehicles. In order to achieve this target, this state-owned company will build a battery factory to become a major supplier in the industry.

Pertamina Subholding Power and New and Renewable Energy CEO Heru Setiawan said that in the battery project for electric vehicles, his party will be involved since the manufacturing process of precursors, cathodes, battery cells and battery packs.

"We will produce 140 GW (gigawatt) per hour. We hope it will become a global supply chain. Because the potential supply is 15 million tons per year", he said, during a Webinar entitled 'EV Battery: The Future of Indonesia's Economy' in Jakarta, Tuesday, February 2.

Heru said that the production will be used to supply electric car manufacturers throughout the world, including America, Europe and Asia Pacific.

Regarding investment, Heru explained, Pertamina had prepared funding, but he was reluctant to disclose it. Pertamina will also collaborate with strategic partners in the battery project for these electric vehicles.

"We will participate with technology providers who already master the technology as well as the market, this cooperation transfer technology so as to develop internal capabilities", he said.

Pertamina, Heru said, had the appropriate competence to be involved from the upstream, intermediate, to downstream processes. The reason is, his party has provisions related to mining and chemistry.

Heru explained, since the beginning Pertamina has also prepared an energy transition by preserving all existing assets so that they can remain relevant to future trends.
