JAKARTA - The City Government (Pemkot) of Jayapura, Papua commemorates the 78th Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia by handing over operational vehicles to 1 ondoafi (traditional leader) in the area, Thursday, August 17. The handover of the car as a symbol of the state recognizing the existence of law and indigenous peoples indicates that the state gives honor and respect to indigenous peoples.

"To coincide with the 78th Indonesian Independence Day, the Jayapura City Government is giving awards to indigenous peoples by handing over operational vehicles," Acting Mayor of Jayapura Frans Pekey said, quoted by ANTARA.

According to Pekey, the operational vehicle is a form of appreciation for the charity institution as well as to support the mobilization of community activities or administration of government to the community.

"The government's attention in various fields remains a priority for indigenous peoples to lead to the common welfare of all people in Jayapura City," he said.

Meanwhile, Head of the Jayapura City Regional Financial and Asset Management Agency (BPKAD), Desi Wanggai said the total budget for the vehicles handed over to the 11 ondoafi was IDR 4.8 billion, sourced from the 2023 special autonomy fund (Otsus).

According to Wanggai, the provision of vehicles to prayer organizations in Jayapura City is the first Jayapura City Government program under the leadership of the Acting Mayor of Jayapura Frans Pekey.

"So we hope that in the future with this vehicle it can help self-confidence to carry out its functions in running the wheels of government in the village," he said.

He explained that the handover of the vehicles was also intended so that the charity institution would no longer rent vehicles to travel from village to city.
