Deputy Chairperson of the NasDem Party Ahmad Ali said the government was still consistent in guarding democracy in Indonesia.
"The government will not be able to destroy democracy just because of temporary interests," Ali said as quoted by ANTARA, Wednesday, July 12.
Ali made this affirmation in response to questions related to the Coalition for Amendments to Unity (KPP) which has not announced the prospective vice presidential candidate (cawapres) for assistant to the presidential candidate (candidate) Anies Baswedan in the 2024 election.
"We have not announced the vice presidential candidate, not because we are afraid of criminalization. We believe the government will not be able to criminalize the nation's children," he said.
According to him, currently the government is the umbrella or protection for anyone in the democratic process in Indonesia.

Ali said the Coalition for Change for Unity was still waiting for the right time and momentum to announce the prospective vice presidential candidate for Anies Baswedan's companion.
"We hope that parties that are members of the coalition will not urge Anies Baswedan to announce his vice presidential candidate in a hurry," he said.
The Coalition for Amendments to Unity (KPP) is a combination of three political parties, namely the NasDem Party, the Democratic Party and PKS, by carrying Anies Baswedan as a presidential candidate in the 2024 General Election.
