JAKARTA - The head of the UN humanitarian aid agency said donors promised humanitarian aid of nearly $1.5 million for Sudan and neighboring countries housing refugees from the conflict in the country.

"I am pleased to say that today, the contributors announced nearly $1.5 million for humanitarian response to Sudan and the region," Martin Griffith said in a statement quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, June 20.

"This crisis requires sustainable financial support and I hope we can all make Sudan our top priority," Griffith continued, welcoming the commitment voiced by member states and partners during a conference on refugees.

Filippo Grandi, the top commission for UN refugees, praised the total amount of aid promised, and said that the funds should be allocated and disbursed immediately so that more aid could reach those in dire need in Sudan and neighboring countries.

The contributors conference in Geneva was held jointly by Egypt, Germany, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the European Union.

Sudan has been damaged by fighting between the army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 15. Nearly 1,000 civilians were killed and thousands injured in the violence, according to local medics.
