JAKARTA - Google employees from around the world formed a trade union alliance, weeks after workers at the search engine giant and other units of parent company Apple formed unions for US and Canadian offices.

The UNI Global Union, which represents about 20 million workers globally, said it was helping to form Alpha Global, Google's union alliance spanning many countries, including the United States, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

Alpha Global will fight for the rights of Alphabet's permanent employees as well as temporary, vendor and contract workers, according to UNI Global.

"The problems in Alphabet ... are not limited to one country, and must be addressed at a global level," said UNI Secretary General Christy Hoffman.

After years of protests over working conditions and business practices, 200 Google workers formed the Alphabet Workers Union, the so-called "minority union," in early January.

Under US labor laws, Alphabet can waive union demands until the majority of employees support the union's demands.
