Government Sets Eid To Fall On Thursday 29 June 2023

JAKARTA - The government officially implements 1 Zulhijah 1444 Hijri/2023 AD to fall on Tuesday (20/6) 2023, thus Eid al-Adha falls on Thursday (29/6) 2023, after being decided through an isbat session on Sunday (18/6).

"Hisab is already above the horizon but has not met the criteria of the Minister of Religion of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore (MABIMS) and reports of the hilal are also not visible. In consensus 1 Zulhijah falls on Tuesday, June 20, 2023 AD," said Deputy Minister of Religion Zainut Tauhid Sa'adi during a press conference on the initial determination of Zulhijah 1444H in Jakarta, Sunday, quoted by Antara.

The Deputy Minister of Religion said this decision was taken after considering the results of the hilal position reckoning and the rukyatul hilal report. Of the 99 points in 34 provinces of monitoring the hilal, none of them reported having seen the hilal.

Based on the results of the presentation of the Hijri Calendar Unification Team of the Ministry of Religion during Maghrib, June 18, 2023, the position of the moon in Indonesia is 0 degrees 20 minutes to 2 degrees 36 minutes, with an elongation angle between 4 degrees 40 minutes to 4 degrees 94 minutes.

While the new MABIMS criteria establish that astronomically, the hilal can be observed if the moon has a minimum height of 3 degrees and an elongation of at least 6.4 degrees.

With the stipulation of Eid al-Adha on Thursday (29/6) 2023, there is a difference with the Muhammadiyah Central Leadership (PP) which stipulates Eid al-Adha 1444 H falls on Wednesday (28/6).

The decision of PP Muhammadiyah is contained in the Muhammadiyah Central Leadership Decree Number 1 / MLM / I.0 / E / 2023 concerning the Determination of the Results of Ramadan, Syawal, and Zulhijah 1444 H.

With the method of hisab hakiki formul hilal which is guided by Muhammadiyah, the new lunar month begins when the 29th day begins when the sunset meets the following three cumulative requirements, namely the ijtimak has occurred.

Then, ijtimak occurs before sunset and at sunset the Moon (top tip) is still above the horizon.
