Three Bodies Found On British Streets: One Suspect Arrested, Police Counter Terrorism Launch Investigation

JAKARTA - British police arrested a suspect suspected of murder after three people were found dead on the street in the central British city of Nottingham on Tuesday and three people were injured, after an attempt to crash them with a van.

The detectives said they had an open mind about the motive of the related incident, which started just after 4 a.m. local time, adding police counter-terrorism was conducting an investigation, although they said it was normal.

Two of those killed were students from a university in the city. A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and detectives say they are not looking for anyone else.

The massive operation, which caused many roads in Nottingham to close, began after police received reports of two people being stabbed and left on a street in the city center. Both are 19 years old.

Officers were then notified of another incident that occurred not far from there, where a person driving a van tried to crash into three people, causing one person to be in critical condition at the hospital, while two others suffered minor injuries.

An eye witness, Lynn Haggitt, told BBC TV she saw a van hitting a man and a woman lying on the street.

"He immediately hit the two people. The woman fell onto the pavement, the man flew into the air," he said.

"There was a loud bang. I hope I never see it. It really shook me," continued Haggit.

A five-year-old man was later found dead from a knife wound shortly after that on the road about two miles from the first incident.

Police said they believed the suspect had stolen the man's van, which was used to injure the three men.

"We remain open-minded as we investigate the circumstances around this incident and work closely with the Counter-Terrorism Police to establish facts - as we usually do in situations like this," said Police Chief Kate Meynell.

"We are in the early stages of the investigation and need to determine the motive behind this attack and will continue to provide the latest information to the public as soon as we can deliver it," he explained.

Police said they had searched a number of addresses in the city but no further arrests.

Several main roads around the city remain closed and Nottingham' tram networks suspended.

"I continue to get the latest information about the progress. Police should be given time to do their job," Prime Minister Rishi Sunak wrote on Twitter, calling the incident "surprising".

Meanwhile, Nottingham University said two of those killed were students.

"We were shocked and devastated by this news and our thoughts with those affected, their family and friends," the university tweeted via its Twitter account.
