PADANG- As one of the white shrimps that is quite commercial, the cultivation of vaname shrimp in Indonesia is currently the mainstay of the cultivation fisheries sector and is a priority for accultural development in order to improve the national economy.

Fish Quarantine Station Control Quality and Fishery Products (SKIPM) of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Padang, West Sumatra, recorded as many as 16.3 million vaname shrimp seeds entering West Sumatra throughout May 2023.

The head of SKIPM Padang Abdur Rahman in Padang, Saturday, said that as many as 16.3 million vaname shrimp seeds had an economic value of Rp. 978 million.

"This number is much increased compared to April 2023 which amounted to 3.5 million," he said, quoted by ANTARA, Saturday, June 10.

Meanwhile, he said that throughout May 2023 the total fishery products that entered West Sumatra were worth IDR 1.98 billion.

"We issued 72 fish health certificates after examining the fishery results that came in," he said

In April 2023, the total value of fishery products that entered West Sumatra was Rp. 781 million with 32 health certificates issued by SKIPM.

Abdur added that in addition to vaname shrimp seeds, a number of fishery products entered the local area, such as 58,819 freshwater ornamental fish with a value of Rp294 million, 6,955 betta fish with a value of Rp695 million, 275 brasil turtles worth Rp1.37 million, 96 catfish mothers worth Rp5.7 million, 28 kilograms of natural feed worth Rp3.6 million and 22 kilograms of other fishery products worth Rp3 million.

"The fishery results were imported from a number of areas such as Jakarta, Surabaya, Bakauheni, Batam, and others," he said.

Before entering West Sumatra, his party checked physically the freshness of caught fish with the characteristics of fish meat still chewy and fish eyes that are still bright. They also took fish samples for laboratory examination.

"In the laboratory, we will determine whether these fish are free from formalin, histamins, heavy metals and are in accordance with demand. If they are free, they will be given a certificate stating that fish are free from disease and are worth exporting," he said.

According to him, all laboratory facilities owned by SKIPM Padang have been accredited by the National Accreditation Agency to ensure that the fish that will be consumed by the public and exported are guaranteed quality.
