MUI Urges OIC And UN To Take Steps To Stop Sudan's Military Conflict

JAKARTA - The Indonesian Ulema Council has appealed to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the United Nations to immediately take steps to stop the armed conflict in Sudan.

"The MUI urges the OIC and UN to immediately stop this civil war," said MUI Deputy General Chair Anwar Abbas in a written statement received by Antara in Jakarta, Monday.

Thus, he continued, the people of Sudan can return to life safely, peacefully, peacefully, prosperously, and happily.

Currently, according to Anwar, efforts to stop the armed conflict in Sudan between the Sudanese military and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group are not easy, especially as both sides have thousands of fighters and resources.

"Both sides share tens of thousands of fighters, foreign supporters, mineral wealth, and other resources they can use to destroy their opponents," he said.

Therefore, Anwar views that the conflict needs to be resolved immediately by the OIC and UN because if it is allowed to drag on, it can make the Sudanese people suffer.

Earlier, on Thursday (20/4), UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had urged Sudanese troops and paramilitary forces to immediately stop fighting and call for a ceasefire.

"There is a strong consensus to condemn the ongoing fighting in Sudan and calls for an end to hostilities," Guterres said.

He also expressed deep concern over the number of civilians who were victims, the bad humanitarian situation and the terrible further escalation prospects.

Fighting between Sudanese military forces and RSFs has been going on since Saturday (15/4) in the capital Khartoum and surrounding areas.

RSF accused Sudanese soldiers of attacking its troops in the south of Khartoum with light and heavy weapons, while the military claimed that paramilitary forces spread lies and called them rebel groups.
