Earthquake In Majene Cause Casualties And Damage To Buildings

JAKARTA - An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2, which occurred in Majene Regency, West Sulawesi Province, on Friday at 01.28 WIB caused casualties and damage to buildings.

"The Mamuju BPBD report, three people died and 24 (people) were injured. As many as 2,000 residents fled to a safer place," said Head of Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center for the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) Raditya Jati in BNPB press release, reported by Antara, Friday, January 15.

According to him, the Maleo Hotel building and the West Sulawesi Governor's Office in the Mamuju Regency area suffered heavy damage due to the earthquake whose center was about six km northeast of Majene.

In Majene, according to a report by the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the earthquake triggered landslides at three points along the axis of the Majene-Mamuju road, causing access to be cut off and causing damage to 62 houses, one health center, and the Malunda Military Military Command Office.

BPBD has collected data and evacuated residents who were affected by the disaster and established refugee camps. According to the BPBD report, disaster victims need basic food assistance, blankets, mats, tents, tarpaulins, and medical services.

According to the monitoring of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, the earthquake in Majene was felt in the Majene and Mamuju areas on the MMI IV-V scale as well as Palu, Middle Mamuju, North Mamuju, and Mamasa on the III MMI scale.

On the MMI scale III, the earthquake vibrations are felt clearly in the house and it feels like a truck is passing by.

On the MMI scale IV, earthquake vibrations during the day are felt by many people inside the house and some outside the house and cause broken pottery, rattling windows / doors, and sounding walls.

Vibrations on the MMI V scale were felt by almost all residents, waking many people, and causing broken pottery, bouncing items, poles and large items jiggling.
