Mahfud MD's Track Record In The Ministry's Chair

YOGYAKARTA Mahfud MD's track record before becoming Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia has drawn the spotlight from the wider community. This happened because of Mahfud MD's bold attitude during a meeting to discuss suspicious transactions of Rp. 349 trillion with Commission III of the DPR on Wednesday, March 29.

Mohammad Mahfud Mahmodin or familiarly called Mahfud MD was a man born on May 13, 1957 in Sampang, Madura. In the era of the Jokowi Government, Mahfud MD was appointed as Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs. Mahfud is known as one of the ministers with a broad perspective, especially in the field of constitutional law and received a professorship from the education he took.

Mahfud MD turned out to be a minister several times. His career began during the era of Abdurrahman Wahid or Gus Dur. At that time he was trusted to hold the position of Minister of Defense from August 26, 2000 to August 14, 2001.

At that time the figure of Mahfud MD also attracted attention. He is quite striking because he is a civilian who sits as Minister of Defense. However, he managed to make quite positive achievements, one of which was the promulgation of Law (UU) No. 3/2002 on National Defense.

In the same government, Mahfud was also appointed as Minister of Justice and Human Rights replacing Yusril Ihza Mahendra who was fired on February 8, 2001. In the era of President Jokowi, Mahfud MD returned to sit as minister. He was appointed as Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs (Menko Polhukam) in the Advanced Indonesia Cabinet for the period 2019 to 2024.

During his time as Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, Mahfud MD was quite active. He, who is the former Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court (MK) for the 2008-2013 period, helped uncover several major cases in Indonesia. For example, Asabri's corruption case.

In early 2020 Mahfud stated that there was a deviation against state finances of approximately Rp. 16 trillion. After he received sufficient information, Mahfud coordinated with the Attorney General's Office (AGO) to uncover the case. Mahfud is not sufficient to uncover major corruption cases in Indonesia. He also uncovered a 2015 Satellite corruption case at the Ministry of Defense. As a result, the state has to bear losses of up to hundreds of billions of rupiah.

Another case that has attracted national attention is a case related to Ferdy Sambo. At that time Mahfud MD was quite active in overseeing the trial process of Ferdy Sambo until the court's verdict was final.

Mahfud MD's courage in dismantling the corruption case involving Papua Governor Lukas Enembe also deserves thumbs up. Because at that time the time of gathering was to thwart Lukas' arrest. However, the arrest was successfully made without taking any lives.

Mahfud MD is currently in the spotlight for revealing suspicious transactions of up to hundreds of trillions at the Ministry of Finance. The transaction occurred in the period 2009 to 2023. In his presentation, the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs explained that there were approximately 160 suspicious transaction reports involving more than 460 people with a total value of Rp. 300 trillion.
