KUPANG - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) appealed to residents to be aware of the potential for extreme weather to hit the East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) region due to low pressure over the next few days.

"There are areas of low-pressure centers in the southeast and southwest of NTT which form areas of bends and wind confluence in NTT which can cause extreme weather in the form of light to heavy rain accompanied by strong winds," said BMKG El Tari Kupang Meteorological Station Head, Agung Sudiono Abadi, as quoted by ANTARA, Friday March 3.

He said this was related to the weather early warning in the NTT region which was valid for March 3-5.

Agung explained that the low pressure was supported by warm sea surface temperatures and sufficiently wet humidity in every layer of the atmosphere.

This has caused the NTT region to experience an increase in wind speed and the potential for heavy light rain which can be accompanied by lightning and strong winds of short duration.

He mentioned areas with the potential for moderate to heavy rain, namely Kupang City, Kupang Regency, Alor, Lembata, East Flores, Sabu Raijua, East Manggarai, Ngada, Nagekeo, Alor, Belu, Ende, Sikka, Malacca, North Central Timor, South Central Timor.

Meanwhile, areas that have the potential to be hit by strong winds, namely Rote, Sabu, parts of Timor Island, Flores, Lembata, Alor.

Agung appealed to residents in these areas to be aware of the potential impact of rain and strong winds which can cause hydrometeorological disasters such as floods, flash floods, landslides.

In addition, be aware of fallen trees, slippery roads, and damage to roofs of buildings and other public facilities.

"Especially for areas with a steep or mountainous topography, you should be aware of the potential for landslides and flash floods when there is rain with a long duration of time," he said.
