JAKARTA - Jakarta's congestion in recent years has escalated. Activity restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic have been eliminated. Traffic conditions that had improved, are now back to chaos.

Head of the DKI Jakarta Transportation Agency, Syafrin Liputo, admitted that the level of congestion in Jakarta had increased from last year. However, Syafrin did not reveal data regarding the current congestion rate. Syafrin explained that one of the causes of the increase in Jakarta congestion was infrastructure development, namely the construction work of the Harbor Road II Toll Road on Jalan RE Martadinata and Jalan Lodan Raya. "On the north side, it was at RE Martadinata, this year we have the construction work of Harbor Road Toll II. Where, currently there is traffic engineering management for the RE Martadinata road which was 4 lanes in 2 directions, now it is 2 lanes in 1 direction, so, there is a density because it is quite long from the JIS area to the west," said Syafrin, Monday, February 13. This toll road construction project in North Jakarta, according to Syafrin, is also the cause of the delay in traffic at the Jakarta International Stadium (JIS) after the Dewa concert 19 some time ago. This traffic density has drawn complaints from many people. In addition, another project that causes congestion is the construction of the Jabodebek LRT pole on Jalan MT Haryono, Jalan Gatot Suboto, to Jalan HR Rasuna Said. Projects along the way of this protocol also result in congestion reaching to other areas. "There are several lanes whose points have become not optimal due to the construction of the Jabodebe LRT pole. So that previously there were 4 lanes, 1 lane was taken to 3 lanes and so on," said Syafrin.

The DKI Provincial Government also feels that it must move quickly to unravel congestion which is now increasingly becoming. In addition to long-term plans such as improving public transportation infrastructure and disincentive private vehicle users, there are short-term and urgent plans prepared.

One of them, the DKI Jakarta Transportation Agency will close 27 turning lines or U-turns in Jakarta. The barrier installation that closed the route began to be carried out in stages. The 27 U-turn points have been completely closed in June.

Based on the study, U-turn is one of the causes of the increase in traffic density. Because, there will be a slowdown in the traffic rate when the vehicle turns around. Then, the 8 U-turn points that have been closed in the previous period turned out to be able to reduce the traffic density. "The U-turn is quite high, it affects the movement because at several points in the rotation, once the vehicle will maneuver, it will usually take up lanes to the left, at least half the lane, it will be combined by a rotating vehicle. Likewise, at the time the person concerned rotates, it is not automatic at one lane, but two lanes are directly used," he explained. Then, the DKI Transportation Agency will make changes in traffic flow from the original two directions to just one direction. However, Syafrin has not detailed which roads the one-way system will implement.

In addition, Syafrin also revealed that his party is collaborating with Google to implement a Green Light project with artificial intelligence (AI) as a congestion breaking system in Jakarta.

The Green Light project aims to optimize the function of traffic lights to reduce congestion, fuel consumption, and vehicle emissions by utilizing Android-based AI technology.

In the near future, the Green Light trial will be implemented starting from the intersection of Jalan Imam Bonjol, Jalan Dipenogoro, Jalan Proclamation, Jalan Pramuka, to Jalan Pemuda.

"The MOU has been signed and currently colleagues from Google are conducting data analysis. We identified 8 junctions arranged with traffic light, this will be coordinated using a database that is currently being analyzed by Google colleagues," said Syafrtin.
