JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo has entrusted messages to conventional and digital press media to continue to uphold journalistic ethics in facing the 2024 General Election.

The head of state also emphasized that the press should prevent the phenomenon of divided supporters of candidates who usually appear during the moment of the general election.

"Entering the political year, the mass media must continue to adhere to idealism, objectiveness and not be disturbed by polarization," Jokowi said in his speech at the Peak of the 2023 National Press Day Commemoration (HPN) in Medan, North Sumatra (North Sumatra), Thursday 9 February.

Jokowi also asked the press media to continue to oversee the election moment which will be held in 2024 so that it can run honestly and fairly and strengthen the unity of Indonesia.

"The mass media must remain the fourth pillar of democracy and become the main reference for the public in obtaining information," said Jokowi.

Before attending the 2023 HPN Peak, Jokowi admitted that he had eaten duren together with national and local media officials in Medan, North Sumatra. During the relaxing moment, problems faced by conventional and digital press media were also discussed.

Jokowi said that one of the problems related to the future of conventional and digital media is being discussed by Kominfo. He also asked the Minister of Communication and Information to discuss the substance with press personnel so that the rules would be immediately resolved.

"I will participate later in several discussions about this [Perpres]," said Jokowi.
