JAKARTA - The Presidential Staff Office (KSP) is committed to continuing to oversee the management of the residual social conflict on Haruku Island, Central Maluku Regency. Presidential Chief of Staff Dr. Moeldoko also emphasized that the government will ensure the sustainability of the community rehabilitation and reconciliation process, after the process of repatriating the Kariuw refugees.

This was conveyed in a coordination meeting on the resolution of the residual social conflict on Haruku Island, at the Bina Graha Building Jakarta, Wednesday (8/2), which was chaired by KSP and attended by a number of related parties; Central Maluku Regional Government, Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture, Ministry of Public Development, BNPB, Ministry of Social Affairs, Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, Ministry of Home Affairs, and Polri/TNI units.

This coordination meeting is the last meeting to resolve the residual social conflict on Haruku Island. KSP itself has gone to the field 3 times, starting from looking at the state of refugees, meeting with important groups in Maluku, the reconciliation process for Pelauw and Kariuw groups, as well as the repatriation stage for Kariuw refugees," said Moeldoko.

"The success of the return of the Kariuw refugees back to their village is an indication of the beginning of the formation of peace in Central Maluku," he added.

Meanwhile, according to a report by the Acting Regent of Central Maluku, Muhamat Marasebessy, in the coordination meeting, it was recorded that out of a total of 1,238 Kariuw refugees in Aboru village, all of them had been successfully repatriated.

Please note, this conflict on Haruku Island involves two citizens (as it is called for villages) Kariuw and Pelauw and has occurred since January 2022. As an effort to rehabilitate and reconcile, Moeldoko asked the relevant Ministries/Institutions to immediately formulate a housing assistance scheme and plantation seeds for residents affected by the conflict.

As for the plan, there will be an expansion program for cloves and nutmeg plantations in Kariuw and Pelauw villages with an area of 600 ha for each commodity. The government has also prepared the provision of seeds to farmers affected by the conflict in the hope that the two parties in conflict can continue their livelihoods.

"In the process, there will be more specific meetings, for example related to housing and plantation issues. KSP is also ready to facilitate this continued joint meeting in order to get a full portrait of the management of the residual conflict on Haruku Island," said Moeldoko.

The government ensures that handling social conflicts, rehabilitation and reconciliation programs, as well as opportunities for the Social Welfare Assistance program will be carried out in a balanced manner and not take sides to ensure that peace at the community level is sustainable.
