The Ministry Of Foreign Affairs Ensures That There Are No Indonesian Victims In The Shooting In California

JAKARTA - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that no Indonesian citizens (WNI) were victims of a shooting incident at a nightclub near Los Angeles City, California State, on Saturday, January 21 evening.

"The Indonesian Consulate General in Los Angeles has coordinated with local authorities and the Indonesian people. Until now there is no information about the victims of Indonesian citizens," said Director of Protection for Indonesian Citizens and BHI of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Judha Nugraha via text message on Monday.

The shooting took place in the middle of a Chinese New Year celebration held at Lai Lai Ballroom & Studio, inside a club located in Monterey Park and killing 10 people.

In addition to fatalities, 10 other people were reported injured. Police reported that the perpetrator, who was an Asian man, had fled after the incident occurred. He then committed suicide when police were about to arrest him on Sunday, January 22.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said the motive for the shooting was unknown. He identified the suspect as Huu Can Tran (72 years old) who was holding a gun with a high-capacity magazine.

"We want to know, we want to know how this terrible thing happened," Luna told reporters quoted by ANTARA.

Luna said Tran pointed a gun at herself on Sunday morning when police approached a white van she was driving in Torrance, about 34 km from the shooting site in Monterey Park.

Montery Park, located in eastern Los Angeles, has a population of 61,000 people and about 65 percent of the population are of Asian descent, according to a LA Daily News report.
