KALTENG - The Central Kalimantan Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) revealed that for the first time, orangutans have been detected in the Pararawen Nature Reserve, North Barito Regency.

According to the Head of the Central Kalimantan BKSDA, the orangutan was seen on a camera installed in the nature reserve.

"The presence of orangutans in the Pararawen Nature Reserve certainly adds information to the richness of biodiversity in it," said Sadtata, Friday, January 20, as quoted by Antara.

He explained that previously the villagers around the Pararawen Nature Reserve had never encountered or heard the voice of an orangutan in the conservation area designated as a nature reserve in 1979.

However, he continued, reports regarding encounters with orangutans in the Pararawen Nature Reserve were submitted by the public in 2020 and 2021.

Based on the report, according to him, camera traps were installed in the Pararawen Nature Reserve in 2021 and the camera traps managed to record the activity of one orangutan in the reserve area by the end of 2022.

"Hopefully the orangutan population in the Pararawen Nature Reserve can be maintained and able to carry out the functions of the ecosystem in it," he said.
