SLEMAN - Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development Center (BPPTKG) said the sound of avalanches was heard once from Mount Merapi based on the observation period on Tuesday, January 10 starting at 00.00 WIB to 06.00 WIB.

Head of BPPTKG, Agus Budi Santoso, explained that the sound of avalanches in the active volcano was heard with moderate intensity.

"One sound was heard from the Babadan Post with a moderate noise intensity," Agus said in his official statement in Yogyakarta, Tuesday, January 10, which was confiscated by Antara.

During that period, BPPTKG also recorded 18 avalanches, five multi-phase earthquakes, 22 deep volcanic earthquakes, and two distant tectonic earthquakes.

Based on visual observations, he said, the smoke from the weak pressure crater was observed to be white with a thin to moderate intensity as high as 20-25 meters above the top of the mountain located on the border of the Special Region of Yogyakarta and Central Java.

While the weather on the mountain was cloudy with the wind blowing weakly to the east, the air temperature was 18-18.3 degrees Celsius, humidity was 70-94.4 percent, and air pressure was 568.5-689.25 mmHg.

Agus added, based on the results of morphological analysis in the period 30 December 2022 to 5 January 2023, no significant morphological changes were observed in the Merapi dome.

"No significant morphological changes have been observed from the southwest dome and the middle dome," he said.

The volume of the southwest lava dome was recorded at 1,616,500 cubic meters and the central dome at 2,772,000 cubic meters.

Until now, BPPTKG still maintains the status of Mount Merapi at Level III or Alert.

The lava fall and hot clouds from Mount Merapi can have an impact on areas in the south-southwest sector which includes the Boyong River (a maximum of five km) and the Bedog River, Krasak, Bebeng (a maximum of seven km).

In addition, lava avalanches and hot clouds from Mount Merapi can have an impact on areas in the southeast sector which include the Woro River (a maximum of three km) and the Gendol River (a distance of five km).

If the volcano experiences explosive eruptions, Agus said, the eruption of volcanic material can reach an area within a radius of three kilometers from the top of the mountain.
