JAKARTA - Brazilian police were deployed in a camp supporting former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro in the capital on Monday, a day after rioters launched their worst attack on Brazilian state institutions since returning to democracy in the 1980s.

Hundreds of police in riot gear and some on horses gathered at camps near the headquarters of the Brasilia army, while soldiers in the area withdrew, witnesses Reuters said, following Sunday's raid by thousands of Bolsonaro supporters on Congress, the Supreme Court and the presidential palace.

Police recaptured damaged public buildings in the futuristic capital after three hours and dispersed the crowd with tear gas.

President Luiz Inacio CLA da Silva vowed to bring those responsible for the violence to justice after demonstrators broke windows and furniture, destroyed artwork and stole weapons and artifacts.

The president, who is akrba called Lala, said the local military police who reported to the Governor of Brasilia Ibaneis Rocha, a former ally of Bolsonaro, had done nothing to stop the progress of the protesters.

He also ruled a federal intervention over public security in the capital, pledging penalties for "fascist" attack leaders aimed at provoking a military coup that could return Bolsonaro to power.

"Everyone who does this will be found and punished," President CLA told reporters from the State of Sao Paulo.

Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered the Brazilian governor to be suspended from his post on Sunday evening for 90 days, due to alleged security disturbances.

He also ordered social media platforms Facebook, Twitter, and TikTok to block user accounts spreading anti-democracy propaganda.

Separately, Justice Minister Flavio Dino said 200 demonstrators had been arrested. Meanwhile, Governor Rocha previously wrote on Twitter that the number arrested was about 400 people.

It is known that President Lula blamed Bolsonaro for fomenting the spirit of his supporters, after a campaign of baseless accusations about election fraud.

From Florida, where Bolsonaro flew 48 hours before his term ended, the former president rejected the allegations. He said on Twitter the peaceful demonstration was democratic but the invasion of government buildings was "over the line."

It is known that the deployment of riot police in the future of the command headquarters of the Brazilian army was therefore a gathering place and camping for Bolsonaro supporters since October.
