MAKASSAR - Floods inundated a number of areas in Makassar, South Sulawesi (Sulsel). Eighty people from 18 families (KK) in Perumnas Antang Blok 10, Manggala District, Makassar fled to Makka Mosque because their houses were flooded.

Refugee coordinator Hajrah said the rain with a high enough intensity had made some local residents evacuate to quite high places.

"Because the water is getting higher, residents whose houses are flooded then evacuate to the mosque while waiting for the water to recede," he said as quoted by Antara, Saturday, December 19.

He said that the intense rainfall for several days had made the settlement of Perumnas Antang Blok 10, Manggala Subdistrict, unable to drain water into the drainage channel resulting in flooding.

Hajrah explained, after residents fled to the Al Makka Mosque, some residents needed assistance, be it medicine or food.

The urgent need, he said, was rubbing oil to warm the body because most of them were cold after the flood.

"Only 18 families and 80 people displaced. If anyone can bring aid, bring the urgent ones like food and medicine," Hajrah continued.

Meanwhile, an estimator from the Makassar Region IV Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Nur Asia Utami said that according to the forecast, heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds is a common occurrence before the end of the rainy period.

"Rain that occurs at the beginning of the dry season is common. Entering the dry season does not mean there is no rain at all, but what is an indicator is the amount of rainfall every decade," he said.
