Floods In North Aceh Get Worse, Electricity Goes Out

BANDA ACEH - Floods that hit a number of sub-districts in North Aceh Regency, Aceh Province are getting worse because of the heavy rains that continue to flush. Electricity in several villages was also reported out.

"The floods are getting worse, I am getting ready to evacuate," said Muhammad Zulfadli, a community leader in Gampong Tanjong Haji Muda, Matangkuli District, in North Aceh, quoted by Antara, Saturday, December 5.

Previously, said Zulfadli, some people in his village had already fled to the shelter in his village and other safer places.

"Because the flood is getting worse, we also have to evacuate, the water level in the house is above the waist (of adults). In our village, the lights have also gone out since this afternoon," he said.

He said that in certain places the water level in the yard of the residents in his village has reached about 2 meters, while those on the road are about the size of an adult's waist.

Heavy rain continues to flush the North Aceh region at this time. Meanwhile, in Gampong Lubok Pusaka, Langkahan Subdistrict, the flood conditions are reported to have persisted.

"(The flood) persisted even though the rain had stopped this afternoon," said the former head of Lubok Pusaka village, Jaharuddin when contacted.

Previously, the TNI / Polri and other related officers had also evacuated residents in the villages worst hit by the floods since this afternoon.

Previously reported, a number of sub-districts in North Aceh Regency were hit by floods due to high rainfall in the last two days, houses and agricultural land in the area were also submerged with water levels varying from 30 centimeters to 1.5 meters more.

Based on data from the Aceh Disaster Management Agency (BPBA), floods due to heavy rains have so far inundated six sub-districts in North Aceh.

The Chief Executive of BPBA Sunawardi said that the floodwaters in North Aceh were several villages in Tanah Jambo Aye, Matangkuli, Pirak Timu, Langkahan, Bandar Baro and Baktiya districts.

"We are still collecting data on the number of villages and residents affected in several districts," said Sunawardi.

Sunawardi explained that the floods that hit a number of areas in North Aceh were due to heavy rains that overflowed the Jambo Aye, Arakundo and Pirak rivers at around 03.00 this morning.

"The last condition of the water discharge of the Jambo Aye, Keureuto and Pirak rivers is full and increasing, it is very likely that other districts will overflow into people's yards," he said.
