JAKARTA - Russia attacked Ukrainian cities by drone on Monday, killing at least three people in an apartment building in downtown Kyiv during rush hour in the morning, targeting infrastructure across the country in the second major wave of airstrikes in a week.

Soldiers fired into the air trying to shoot the drone down after an explosion rocked the center of Kyiv. Residents fled for cover. An anti-aircraft rocket was seen flying into the early morning sky, followed by an explosion and orange flames.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia's attacks, which took place throughout the night and morning, would not be able to destroy the country, were optimistic that it would win.

"All night and all morning the enemy terrorized civilian residents. Kamikaze drones and missiles attacked all over Ukraine," President Zelensky said on the Telegram messaging app.

"The enemy can attack our cities, but it will not be able to destroy us. The invaders will only get punishment and a fair curse from future generations. And we will get victory," he said.

An official at the Ukrainian Presidential Office said three people were killed in an attack on a residential building in Kyiv. Ukrainian Interior Minister Denys Monastyrskyi said fatalities were also present in other cities, but had not yet provided the amount.

Black smoke came out of the window of the Kyiv apartment building and emergency service workers worked hard to extinguish the fire.

"I've never been so scared. It's murder, it's just murder, there's no other word for that," said Vitalii Dushevskiy, 29, a food delivery courier who rented an apartment in the building that was detonated.

Nearby, Elena Mazur, 52, is looking for her mother, who managed to call her to say she was buried under the rubble.

"He didn't pick up the phone," Mazur said, hoping he was rescued and taken to the hospital.

Ukraine said the attack was carried out by Iran's'suicide drone' or'Kamikaze drone', which flew to their targets and exploded.
