Claiming To Be Stuck In A Pandemic, Specialist Thieves Shattering Luxury Car Glass In North Jakarta Arrested

JAKARTA - The North Jakarta Metro Police arrested ML and AJ for being suspected of being a specialist in car theft with a broken glass mode at the Tanjung Priok Sports Hall.

North Jakarta Metro Police Chief Kombes Sudjarwoko said in Jakarta on Monday that in addition to the two perpetrators, the police also arrested two people as custodians of the stolen goods, SA and MSN.

According to the police, the perpetrator was looking for targets in luxury cars that were parked without supervision. It only took the perpetrators 10 minutes to break the glass and remove the items they were after and could sell.

"The suspect admitted to having committed his actions 20 times in the last six months," said Sudjarwoko as quoted by Antara, Monday, November 30.

They took action in Pantura, Cikampek, Tanjung Priok, Cilincing and a number of other locations. The proceeds from the theft were sold for Rp3.5 million to the collectors. The suspects got a profit of around Rp. 800 thousand.

"The reason is because of the economic needs during the COVID-19 pandemic," said Kombes Sudjarwoko.

From the investigation, it was found that the proceeds from the crime were used to meet his economic needs and buy drugs.

"The results of the urine examination showed that they were positive for using drugs," said Kombes Sudjarwoko.

The suspects were charged under Article 363 of the Criminal Code (KUHP) with the threat of seven years in prison.
