SUMSEL - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts that the transition from the dry season to the rainy season in South Sumatra Province (Sumsel) will take place from the second week of September to October.

Head of South Sumatra BMKG Climatology Station Wayandatoli said that during this period there was a transition from the previous dry weather to moderate-fat intensity rain.

"Transisi berlangsung sampai Oktober, puncak musim hujan diprakirakan berlangsung November-December atau hingga triwulan pertama tahun depan," kata Wayandatolis usai audiensi dengan jajaran Organisasi Perangkat Daerah Pemerintah Provinsi Sumsel di Palembang, dikutip dari Antara, Jumat 23 September.

He appealed to all relevant agencies in each district/city to help increase disaster mitigation efforts during the transition period to the peak of the rainy season.

Mitigation efforts that can be carried out start from socialization to the community regarding disasters, including floods, landslides, tornadoes that can occur at any time.

Including, he said, ensuring the preparedness of officers and supporting equipment in three sectors, namely transportation, agriculture and public health.

"All regions have the potential to experience the impact of this rainy season," he added.

Meanwhile, based on the observations of the South Sumatra BMKG Climatology Station, as of Friday, September 23, 2022, several areas have the potential to experience moderate to heavy rain (100-150 mm thickness) and accompanied by lightning, namely including Pagaralam, Empat Lawang, Lubuk Linggau, South OKU, OKI, Banyuasin, East OKU, OKU, Ogan Ilir, Musi Rawas and North Musi Rawas.

However, his party also predicts forest and land fires still have the potential to occur until October, including at vulnerable points in Ogan Ilir, OKI, Musi Banyuasin and Penukal Abab Lematang Ilir (PALI) Regencies.

"The potential for forest and land fires is still there, one of which is because the La Nina phenomenon is still active," he said.

His party continues to convey daily weather developments to the public through the BMKG digital channel so that all potential disasters can be anticipated early on.
