KNKT Proposal BMKG Office Standing In Each Port Of Indonesia

JAKARTA - The National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) proposes the office of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) to stand in each port in Indonesia.

KNKT chairman Soerjanto Tjahjono said the task of the BMKG office could provide guidance regarding the latest weather. Soerjanto said this during the "Alay Safety Review on Traditional Ships in Indonesia" discussion in Jakarta.

"We hope that there will be BMKG offices in every port. If we look at the airport there is BMKG, this must be the same," he said, quoted from Antara, Wednesday, September 21.

Soerjanto said that information related to weather forecasts as a guide for sailing in a number of areas is often not conveyed properly so that it endangers shipping safety.

He said, in some areas such as Ternate, Tidore, or Halmahera, there are local weather phenomena that are very dynamic and often change compared to other regions, or even countries that have four seasons.

Therefore, he asked BMKG to provide information and real-time weather monitoring to ships that will sail, especially traditional ships.

In addition, the KNKT asked the Office of the Welfare and Port Authority (KSOP) to continue to maximize services to provide education and socialization to crew members.

Based on KNKT's findings, the crew often carry cargo exceeding capacity and carry flammable goods such as fuel oil (BBM) in unsafe packaging.

"We must be aware of this weather so that shipping activities can run safely," he said.

Soerjanto said that the KNKT was also trying to prevent ship accidents in the country.

In addition to weather factors, the KNKT also emphasized the importance of meeting standards and conditions that must be met by ships before sailing.

According to him, traditional ships or people's shipping ships have an important role in the movement of people and goods in the archipelago.

"In the archipelagic area, if the weather is bad for a while, it will have an impact on rising prices of goods or basic necessities," he said.

He added that the KNKT hopes that all stakeholders will provide guidance and supervision regarding ship construction related to machinery and electricity in order to meet safety aspects.
