JAKARTA - The National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) and the United Nations (UNOCT) discussed the protection of the terrorism-prone sector in New York, United States.

"BNPT continues to expand cooperation with various international institutions," said Head of BNPT Komjen Polisi Boy Rafli Amar in a written statement received by Antara, Sunday, September 11.

According to him, initially the main agenda of BNPT at the UN Headquarters was to attend the UN Congress on the victims of terrorism. The meeting with UNOCT is a follow-up activity.

Boy Rafli's meeting with UNOCT Deputy Secretary General Vladimir Voronkov also discussed plans for a UNOCT visit to Indonesia from November 29 to December 2, 2022.

UNOCT will identify the priorities and needs of the Indonesian government in the coverage of the Global Program on Vulnerable Targets Protection in relevant ministries and institutions in the country.

"BNPT welcomes the visit plan and is ready to coordinate UNOCT meetings with relevant ministries and institutions," said Boy Rafli.

BNPT and UNOCT will also discuss the development of the Bali Work Plan 20192025. The Bali Work Plan is an effort by Indonesia together with all ASEAN countries in cooperating with international agencies to discuss fundamental security issues related to violent extreme and deradicalization.

UNOCT is currently preparing a number of programs aimed at strengthening the implementation of the Bali Work Plan 2019-2025, among others, related to prosecution, rehabilitation, and reintegration as well as developing the capacity to counter terrorism.

On May 10-12, 2022, BNPT attended an Asia-level meeting in Thailand to discuss the sports event protection program from extremism attacks.

On this occasion, Indonesia conveyed experience and practice, both in dealing with the threat of terrorism, particularly related to sports events, as well as the role of a peaceful ambassador in preventing violent extremism.

So far, BNPT and UNOCT have also been involved in various strategic counter-terrorism partnerships, particularly at the national and regional levels of Southeast Asia.

Some of the cooperation programs that have been running in supporting government priorities related to terrorism include protection of vital objects, prevention and protection of migrant workers in Southeast Asia from violent-based extremism vulnerabilities.

This includes efforts to strengthen the implementation of the Bali Work Plan 2019-2025 in promoting the prevention and control of extremism crimes in the regional scope as well as in terms of technical cooperation.

"BNPT also continues to strengthen opportunities for cooperation with UNOCT through the framework of the South-South Cooperation which is one of UNOCT's focuses," he said.
