JAKARTA - The United States believes Russia already has drones with weapons capability from Iran, likely to be used on battlefields, but many fail to test when tested.
Russia took drones from Iran's airfield earlier this month, taking them back to Russia by cargo planes in mid-August, officials said.
After participating in drone training in Iran late last month, the US believes Russia has now officially purchased two types of drones from Tehran, Mohajer-6 and Shahed (Shahed-129 and Shahed-191).
Both types of drones are capable of carrying precision-patterned ammunition and can be used for surveillance.
US officials believe Russia intends to import hundreds of these types of drones for air-to-face attacks, electronic warfare and targeting in Ukrainian territory.
The Washington Post first reported that the drone had been transferred to Russia.
In addition to attack capabilities, the drone also has qualified surveillance capabilities, having a significant impact on the battlefield, as Moscow's efforts build up the impact of the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) provided by the US and its allies to Ukraine.
