JAKARTA - A gunman who fled after trying to break into the FBI's Ohio office has died in clashes with police, US authorities say.

The incident comes amid widespread outrage among far-right circles following an FBI search of former president Donald Trump's Florida home, although there was no immediate indication the events were linked.

The FBI said someone with a gun had tried to 'break through' the entrance to the bureau's office in Cincinnati City on Thursday.

"Following activation of the alarm and response by armed FBI special agents, the subject fled," the FBI said in a statement.

Local media reported that the man had fired a nail gun and brandished an AR-15-style rifle before fleeing in a car.

A police spokesman said the vehicle was chased by law enforcement and stopped in a rural area.

"As soon as the vehicle came to a stop, a gun battle broke out between officers at the scene and the suspect," the spokesman said.

The officer then attempted to negotiate with the man, but he did not give up. As the man raised his gun, officers shot him and "he died of his injuries at the scene," the spokesman explained.

Earlier, FBI Director Christopher Wray on Wednesday condemned threats made against FBI agents following the raid on Trump's residence, calling them "sad and dangerous".

"Violence against law enforcement is not the answer, no matter who you are angry with," Wray said.
