Ethiopian Bus Attack Kills 34

JAKARTA - Armed groups in Ethiopia attacked a bus. The attack in the Benishangul-Gumuz region, Ethiopia, killed 34 people.

In a press statement on Sunday, November 15, the local human rights agency announced the attack on Saturday, November 14, when security concerns were rising amidst military camps in the north. Casualties are also likely to increase.

Apart from the west of the country, similar attacks also occurred at other points. However, in another attack, all the victims managed to save themselves.

"The latest attack is a grim addition to the casualties we have suffered collectively," the head of the Human Rights Commission, Daniel Bekele, said in a statement.

He urged regional and federal authorities to coordinate a strategy for Benishangul-Gumuz regarding the "endless" attacks in the region. Gunmen killed 45 people in the same area in September, according to the Ethiopian government.

The violence comes amid a 12-day war between the Ethiopian government and the Tigray region in the north of the country. Experts argue that the conflict has the potential to trigger other ethnic groups to exploit the chaos to promote greater autonomy.
