TEMANGGUNG - Farmers on the slopes of Mount Sumbing and Sindoro in Kledung District, Temanggung Regency, Central Java, Sunday, August 7, held the ruwat rigen tradition before tobacco harvest.

Ruwat rigen began with a procession of participants from 13 villages in Kledung District from the Kledung Village field to the Kledung Rest Area led by the respective village heads. Each village brings rigen as well as tumpeng and ingkung rice.

Rigen is a rectangular sheet of woven bamboo used by farmers to dry tobacco.

The chairman of the Ruwat Rigen Committee, Basori Setyawan, said that ruwat rigen is a tradition of the tobacco farming community. Before doing tobacco harvest they held a ruwat rigen.

"Rigen is cleaned by washing it with water from Sendang Kamulyan," he said.

He conveyed that the purpose of this activity is that the community actually wants to gather together, pray to Allah SWT so that this year's tobacco harvest will get maximum results, and get a lot of sustenance and blessings.

At the ruwat rigen, the Regent of Temanggung M. Al Khadziq symbolically poured water into the rigs brought by each village.

The Regent of Temanggung M. Al Khadziq said that the people of Kledung Sub-district held a celebration before the tobacco harvest which was packaged in a traditional manner with ruwat rigen.

"Ruwat rigen is everything related to tobacco, everything related to tobacco harvesting," he said.

He explained that rigen is one of the tools to process tobacco.
