Learn About Medical Marijuana, Ministry Of Law And Human Rights: If It Is Positive, The Government Will Legalize It

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkumham) will study the proposed legalization of medical marijuana. The government will see two sides of the policy.

"The government will first study the legality of marijuana for medical purposes. We will see the good and the bad," said Head of Public Relations of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, Tubagus Erif Faturahman in a statement to reporters, Wednesday, June 29.

Erif said the government would seek opinions from various experts in their fields. "Such as (expert, red) health, social, religion, and so forth," he said.

Later, if the benefits are greater, it is possible to legalize medical marijuana. However, this step will certainly be followed by the issuance of rules to prevent abuse.

"If there are more positives, the government will definitely legalize marijuana for medical use. And even then with strict mechanisms and regulations to avoid abuse," he said.

As previously reported, a mother's action went viral on social media because she brought a poster asking for help in getting medical marijuana for her child at the Car Free Day (CFD) activity at the HI Roundabout, Central Jakarta, Sunday, June 26.

This action was then uploaded in the posts of several social media accounts, one of which was Dwi Pertiwi.

Dwi is the mother of Musa who died at the age of 16 and has submitted a judicial review on the prohibition of medical marijuana.

Musa died after battling cerebral palsy in December 2020.

Related to this action, the DPR RI then reacted. Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Sufmi Dasco Ahmad said his party would immediately review the discourse on legalizing medical marijuana.

Because, said Dasco, although marijuana can be used for medical treatment in several countries, in Indonesia it is still not regulated by law.

"Later we will try to study whether it is possible for marijuana as a medical drug that can indeed be used," said Dasco at the DPR building, Jakarta, Monday, June 27.
