JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture (Menko PMK) Muhadjir Effendy reminded parents to prevent child marriage in order to avoid various negative impacts that could be caused.

"It is known that child marriage is feared to have negative impacts such as domestic violence, divorce, stunting or stunting in children who will be born until new poor families emerge," said Muhadjir as quoted by ANTARA, Saturday, June 25.

The Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture said that marriage requires readiness to create a harmonious household, both physically and mentally.

"Child marriage can be said to be far from ready. For example, the physical condition of a woman who marries under the age of 18 is feared that her physical condition is not ready to give birth and become a mother. Childbirth at a young age is also feared to threaten the lives of both the mother and the baby," he said.

Married women under the age of 18, he added, their reproductive organs are not mature enough to support optimal fetal growth.

For this reason, he invites all parties to jointly prevent the practice of child marriage.

"Parents are expected not to marry off their sons and daughters at the age of children, give these sons and daughters the opportunity to equip themselves with higher education so that later they become provisions to build a happy household," he said.

Muhadjir also hopes that in the future Indonesia will be free from the practice of child marriage.

"Of course, this is to create a superior generation who is the next generation of the nation and at the same time encourage government programs to move forward Indonesia," he said.

Previously, the Head of the National Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN) Hasto Wardoyo said that early marriage in children can increase maternal mortality (AKI) and infant mortality (IMR).

“Marriage at an early age is very dangerous. Early marriage also has the potential for babies born to be stunted," said Hasto Wardoyo.

He appealed to every family a marriage should be planned as well as possible and carried out at an age that can be said to be adequate.
