Police Reveal The Motives Behind Gus Nur's Hate Speech Case: Claiming To Care About NU

JAKARTA - The National Police revealed the reason why Sugi Nur Rahardja alias Gus Nur spread hate speech against Nahdlatul Ulama (NU). Gus Nur told the police that he cared about NU.

"It turns out that uploading or creating content because submitting uploads on YouTube is clear evidence that those concerned care about NU," said Karo Penmas, Police Public Relations Division, Brigadier General Awi Setiyono to reporters, Tuesday, October 27.

From the interim examination, Gus Nur told the police that there had been many changes in NU. So, he made a sentence that was considered hate speech.

"The person concerned feels that NU's current and previous NU's have different motives," said Awi.

Meanwhile, regarding the progress of case handling, Awi said investigators were still waiting for the results of the digital forensic examination. After that, it will be followed by an ITE expert examination.

"The four witnesses who have examined the two experts, first are criminal law experts and language experts. Then the two reporters," said Awi.

In this case, Gus Nur was reported by the Chairman of the Cirebon Branch of the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) Management Azis Hakim to the Police Criminal Investigation Unit. The report numbered LP / B / 0596 / X / 2020 / Bareskrim dated 21 October 2020.

The reporting was because Gus Nur was considered to be spreading information that caused hatred or enmity related to Nahdlatul Ulama through a statement he uploaded on the MUNJIAT Channel Youtube account on October 16, 2020.

In reporting, Gus Nur allegedly violated Article 27 paragraph (3) and Article 28 paragraph (2) of Law Number (UU) 19/2016 on Electronic Information and Transactions (ITE).
