Chairman Of DPR: Launch Of 2024 Election Stages Proof That There Is No Discussion On Postponement

JAKARTA - The chairman of the House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, stated that the launch of the 2024 election stage on June 14, 2022, is proof that there will be no postponement of the election.

"There was no discussion for the postponement. There was no discussion for stalling, but it was clear from the start in accordance with Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning General Elections that elections are held every 5 years," said Puan as quoted by Antara, Tuesday, June 14.

According to Puan, the start of the 2024 election stage is also proof that there is no longer room for the discourse of postponing the election.

Since the beginning of the DPR, the government, KPU, and many elements of society, said Puan, have committed to holding elections in 2024. However, she reminded all parties not to view elections in Indonesia as merely a democratic mechanism.

"We should not think of elections in Indonesia as just a five-year routine. Elections have a very strategic position in democratic life in Indonesia," said Puan.

According to him, this strategic position is because the election is a manifestation of the practice of the 4th precept of Pancasila, namely democracy led by wisdom in deliberation/representation.

Through elections, continued Puan, the elected leaders gain legitimacy from the people, formulate and formulate various laws to create a divinity, fair and civilized life, maintain unity, and realize social justice for all Indonesian people.

In the era of modern democracy, he said, elections are also an arena for the people to elect executive leaders, ranging from regents/mayors, governors, to presidents and vice presidents.

"With its strategic position, the election results will greatly determine the face of the life of the nation and state, at least for the next 5 years," he said.
