Mass Community Service In Asemrowo District, Surabaya Gets 581 Kg Of Waste, Used Plastics Dominate

JAKARTA - The Surabaya City Government (Pemkot) held community service and training in the Colorful Village tourist area and the RW 02 Mangrove area, Tambak Sarioso Village, Asemrowo District, Surabaya City.

This activity is one of the efforts to contribute in commemorating World Environment Day, which falls on June 5, 2022, as well as empowering the surrounding community to optimize eco tourism there.

Head of DLH Surabaya Agus Hebi Djuniantoro said this activity aims to maintain cleanliness, environmental sustainability and the ecosystem of the tourist area. And, to realize the vision and mission of the Mayor of Surabaya Eri Cahyadi in driving the people's economy.

"This place is a tourist area that has considerable potential. So, apart from protecting the environment, we are also empowering local residents to produce works that can increase their income," said Hebi, his nickname, Saturday, June 11.

On the environmental side, Hebi explained that DLH will hold community service every month to check and monitor, as well as measure how much waste the tourist area produces.

"We also inspire the people of Surabaya to continue to work together to do community service. As of now, there are 400 participants participating. They are not only from DLH and other PDs, but also from the community, university students, and of course local residents," he clear.

As a result, the World Environment Day community service activities in the Kampung Warna-Warni tourist area and the Mangrove area RW 02, Tambak Sarioso Village, Asemrowo District, Surabaya City, managed to transport 581.48 kg of waste. With details, 348,625 Kg of plastic waste, 2.5 Kg of paper waste, and 230,355 Kg of wet/organic waste.

"We also deployed two dump trucks, as a means to transport the garbage," he said.

Dominated by a large amount of plastic waste, Hebi admitted that DLH will continue to invite and conduct socialization to the community to reduce the use of plastic in daily activities.

On the other hand, to strengthen human resources in the tourist area, his party collaborated with a community that cares about the environment, namely the Zero Waste Community to conduct training and assistance regarding the processing of Mangrove fruit and leaves. For this Mangrove fruit, it can be processed into syrup, chips, and dye. Meanwhile, Mangrove leaves can be processed into peanut brittle and tea.

"The training will be followed by residents, so that they can make processed products that are expected to increase the income of the local community. We want this tourist area to be alive, one of which is through the people's economic movement," he concluded.
