JAKARTA - Saudi Arabia's first flight with an all-female crew took off last week, completing a short domestic journey and crossing a milestone for women's empowerment, officials said.

The flight was operated by flyadeal airline, a subsidiary of Saudia airline.

“For the first time in Saudi aviation history,” the airline wrote on Twitter on Friday, “#flyadeal operated the first flight with an all-female crew, the majority of whom were Saudis, on the newest A320 aircraft. Flight 117, flying from #Riyadh to # Jeddah," the airline wrote on Twitter, as reported by The National News May 22.

Most of the seven crew members are from Saudi Arabia, according to spokesman Emad Iskandarani, including the first officer, Yara Jan, who is also reportedly Saudi Arabia's youngest female pilot.

Meanwhile Yara Jan said she was very proud to be able to take part in this historic moment in aviation for Saudi women.

"As a Saudi woman trying to lead my country with pride, it was a moment of pride and joy," she said, citing Arab News.

Jan graduated from flight school in Florida, United States, in 2019, and joined Flyadeal a year ago.

He said being a copilot meant helping pilots in many important tasks such as navigation and completing multiple checklists. Jan realized how important this was for young Saudi women.

"Although being a Saudi female pilot is new, it is not impossible for our generation, especially with the support we have received from our beloved country and our respected leaders, who have supported me a lot to become the youngest female pilot in a Saudi airline. I will always be happy to have the opportunity to make a positive change."

It is known, Saudi Arabia's aviation authority continues to improve the role of women. Last year, figures showed the participation of women in the kingdom's workforce rose to 33 percent by the end of 2020, from 19 percent in 2016, according to data from the General Authority for Statistics.
